Ohio Community Rights Workshop in Medina County, OH

Ohio Community Rights Workshop in Medina County, OH October 14, 2017 what’s happening? Medina County residents are fighting the Nexus pipeline and compressor station. The fracking infrastructure projects threaten clean air and water, and community health and well-being. For the third year, the corporate state of Ohio has blocked residents from advancing a county charter ballot measure that would protect residents from fracking harms. As frustrations mount and growing numbers of residents are demanding answers, Sustainable Medina County and Medina County Together are hosting the Ohio Community Rights Workshop. In the one day workshop, we examine why we don’t have the power to stop compressor stations, pipelines, and others issues facing our communities. We look at how the corporate state overrides local democratic decision-making and forces unjust labor, environmental, and discriminating practices into our communities. And we delve into what communities are doing to elevate the rights of communities and nature over the corporate state. when? Saturday, October 14th, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. where? Community Solutions: A Conference in Yellow Springs, OH

Community Solutions: A Conference in Yellow Springs, OH October 20, 2017 — October 21, 2017 what’s happening? The Community Solutions conference explores the creation of vibrant, local economies with a radically different paradigm: focusing on meeting real human and ecological needs through our ties to the community and nature. CELDF’s Tish O’Dell leads the breakout session, “How Do We Create a Sustainable Community When We Can’t Stop the Unsustainable?” Sustainability is illegal under our current structure of law and governance. This means that the healthy, just, and vibrant environmental and economic systems so many of us envision are infeasible. How is sustainability illegal? What does that actually mean? And – most importantly – what are we going to do about it? It’s not enough to talk about what we want long for in the places where we live. We must act. In this workshop, O’Dell explores the legal barriers that keep us from realizing what we envision for ourselves and future generations – and what nearly 200 communities are doing about it! Municipalities across the country are a part of the growing Community Rights Movement, changing the legal and governing structures we live under to elevate people, communities, and nature, over inequity, destruction, and profits. when? Friday, October 20th Saturday, October 21st Where? Antioch Midwest 900 Dayton St Yellow Spring, OH 45387 join us! For more information, contact: info@communitysolution.org or 937-767-2161. Climate Crisis Solutions: Tools for Transition September 25-27, 2015 Yellow Springs, Ohio

Saturday, September 26th 3:50-5:00 Presentations and Workshops, Antioch Campus Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund and Fracking the Commons with Tish O’Dell and John Morgan “Building sustainable communities by assisting people to assert their right to local self-government and the rights of nature.” We believe that we are in the midst of an escalating ecological crisis, and that the crisis is the result of decisions made by a relatively few people who run corporations and government. We believe that sustainability will never be achieved by leaving those decisions in the hands of a few – both because of their belief in limitless economic production and because their decisions are made at a distance from the communities experiencing the impact of those decisions. Therefore, we believe that to attain sustainability, a right to local self-government must be asserted that places decisions affecting communities in the hands of those closest to the impacts. That right to local self-government must enable communities to reject unsustainable economic and environmental policies set by state and federal governments, and must enable communities to construct legal frameworks for charting a future towards sustainable energy production, sustainable land development, and sustainable water use, among others. In doing so, communities must challenge and overturn legal doctrines that have been concocted to eliminate their right to self-government, including the doctrines of corporate constitutional rights, preemption, and limitations on local legislative authority. Inseparable from the right to local self government – and its sole limitation – are the rights of human and natural communities; they are the implicit and enumerated premises on which local self government must be built. “As a people of ‘we the people’ fame we have become either ahistorical, amazingly obedient, exceedingly stupid, or all three. We can stay that way if we choose-either denying the corporate state or resigning ourselves to it-with the understanding that every day we fail to challenge the corporate state is another day that the planet falls down around us.” – Thomas Linzey
